interesting idea on temp gauge placement

Pretty good idea. I have a OTS that I've been considering adding a thermometer to. My biggest consideration is which side the lid hanger is on and will the thermometer interfere with hanging the lid on the edge of the kettle.

I just bought my son a new OTG for his B-day yesterday, and noticed Weber has added a lid therm. Similar location as that gent's but not that close to the grate, more inline with the vent. I don't think it matters for grilling, but for smoking his might be a better location.

Yeah I agree for smoking it becomes more important. I'm doing a lot of LNS with the 26 and the adjustments necessary for the bottom vent are minimal so it is nice to have the thermometer. Placement is all relative. It's really more important to keep the lid down.

I have done the same to mine, although I have mounted at the top of the dome near the handle, might be a bit too high in hindsight !

I don't have any pics handy but I bought a weber replacement thermometer and drilled out he center rivet from the vent on the lid of my 22 OTG. After drilling out the rivet I placed the therm through the hole I drilled and tightened the nut on the opposite side. Has been working like a charm for a few years now.

That's a neat idea. I don't think it matters where you take the temp as much as how your reference that temp to your cook.

Here are some pictures of my temperature gauge mod.

Here is the under side of the lid. The wingnut is kind of hard to see but that is what holds the vent on. The vent still moves freely.

This is what I have done to all my grills that did not have a thermometer. It is a Char Broil thermo that Home Depot carries for about $8. I have one installed on the OT Platinum shown, my MT, both of my SJP's and on both of my Q100 gassers. I think I drilled a 1/4 inch hole and it fit perfectly. On the Charcoal grills it sits about 2 inches above the grate.
