Indiana > Bass Lake: Frank's BBQ

Recently I was traveling through northern Indiana on state highway 10 when I came around a curve in the vacation area of Bass Lake and stumbled across Frank's BBQ. Usually when I'm on the road I have my food stops picked out in advance but Frank's doesn't appear on Google Maps so this was a total surprise, and even though I'd just finished lunch I thought about it for a minute and decided to stop.

A smoker in the parking lot is always a good sign!

Frank smokes his brisket for a few hours and then adds some homemade basting sauce and foils it until it's done. The meat had a light smoke taste and good flavor, and was quite tender.

This is a reheated rib that had originally been smoked a few days earlier using the same process as the brisket. It was pretty good but I'll bet it was better when it was first cooked (he was going to give the rack to the guys who were delivering his firewood later).

Frank is open from May through September, which just happens to coincide with the summer season and I believe he said this was his 4th year at this location. Bass Lake draws a lot of people from the Chicago area (I told him that being from Wisconsin I know all about that ;) ) so he's in a pretty good spot!
