Indian Mustard Oil

How to make Indian mustard oil? I love it for so many things, Indian and not Indian.

The label of the bottle says soybean oil and mustard oil---not very informative.

The Indian grocery is a 20-30 minute run through a usually congested area. How can I make it at home?

Rita

Not very easily. You need to either press the seeds with an oil seed press, grind the seeds, mix the grind with water and then extract the oil by distilling it, or use the extractives gained from pressing to mix with another oil, like a neutral veg oil. If there is a way to approximate any of these procedures at home without the requisite equipment I don't know of it.

How about that? All of a sudden the drive to the Indian market doesn't look so bad. Thanks, Kevin!

Rita,

I hadn't read your second post when I came to the same conclusion. Its not very often I get a good chuckel in at a post, but that did it. I'm glad to see I'm not the only realist with an optomistic slant.

One more thing Rita. If you can, try to purchase pure mustard oil (without the addition of other oils). IMO, it tastes much better.

Erik, thanks. I didn't know that pure mustard oil was available and I'll check the labels when I buy it.
