Igniting lump

Ofc you can. 20 lit might even be a bit mutch.(depends on what target temp you are looking for) I always light in one spot for about 30 sec with my weed burner. Works like a charm!

I like using a weed torch too light my Kingsford. Whenever I light lump I always wear safety googles. I had a pc fly off one time and hit me square on the forehead!! Too close to my eyes for comfort.

I really like to slow down the start with lump. It catches easier IMHO than standard K style briquettes. So - it can overshoot faster. I say slow it down and use 8-10 briquettes of your choice well placed on the pile of lump. I always use a loaded ring regardless of cook. Shut it down and use the unburnt later.

If using an ATC even better to use less lit and let the controller bring it up to temp.

I always use lump for a bunch of years. I light with hardwoood charcoal briquettes of choice like Royal Oak, Humphrey etc. A bag of briquettes lasts a long time for me as I only use it for lighting slow cooks.

To ignite lump I light it in a chimney. Either coiled/oiled paper start which I haven't done in a long time or using the Performer to light the charcoal chimney, or the stand alone propane chimney starter. For the starter briquettes for slow cooks - I turn the chimney upside/down and place the 8 to 10 briquettes on that now reverse grid which keeps them centered. I just let the propane do that work until they start then shut off the fuel and let them ash up.

I never saw the need for the torch method, but to each his own. I have a torch style ignitor but haven't used it much in a long while. The chimney over propane works fine for me.

I'm with "ScottE", I use a high output propane torch to light my charcoal, in the cooker. It's fast and easy.
