If it ain't broke, I can brake it

I’m pretty frustrated.

I took a Genesis 1000 LP manifold and put it on a Genesis 2000.

Fired it up, all three burners lit perfectly.

I took the manifold off, swapped in different burners to test them and strangely, the middle burner would only light about 1/5 of the distance of the whole burner tube.

Figuring the test proved those other burners needed some work, I put the original burners back on.
Well…. Now the center burner is doing the same thing, barely lighting.

So far I’ve tried to adjust the air intake, even in real time, swapping crossover tubes, swapping propane tanks, cleaned the center manifold orifice with brake cleaner. Nothing is making a difference.

Does anyone know what’s going on here, and what I can do besides just buying new burners to try (which is insane because everything was just working fine)? Thank you!!

Ok, when you said that, I realized that I had taken the grease tray out of the bottom to clean it.

Just put it back in.

Are you kidding me 😂 Thank you!

Seen it happen. The burners burn correctly right on the ragged edge of the proper fuel air ratio. Do one little thing to disrupt it (especially on very long burners like that) and everything goes out the window

I would oversize that middle burner orifice one size bigger, if it was me.
Doesn't look like it is as high of flame as the other two🤔

Honestly I thought that’s how that center burner always is, but I could be wrong. I think I have a bunch of different size orifice options laying around.

Here’s a step up from 1.00 orifice to 1.39 orifice on the center:

In real life it’s quite noticeable, not sure if it’s “too much of a good thing” or not lol

It does look glorious though.

Never start goofing around with the orifices trying to correct a maintenance issue. Easy way to get in over your head. Honestly I hate seeing bad advice like that given out
I did already swap back to the 1.00, it was more of a curiosity experiment on my part. I wouldn’t feel good selling it “modified” from stock though either.

Yeah, it's one thing if you have a properly functioning grill and then is you want to "mod" a little: While not a great idea if it's on your own unit and you accept full well the risks being taken, then give it a go. But modding it to "fix" an issue is entirely dangerous and foolish. Because now you have compounded issues going on.

Larry, we're just going to have to agree to disagree, I've expanded the hole in orifices many times without any bad affects.
I wouldn't do it on my flippers but have on all my keeper grills.
A person just has to use a little common sense on how much bigger he makes the hole.

Kind of reminds me of my crazy "The Judge" project where I stuffed a Broilmaster burner into a small old Sunbeam grill. The original orifice wouldn't provide enough gas to fire up the much larger than stock burner, so with the help of my Maintenance Director where I used to work in Florida, I had the orifice drilled out - a lot - to Broilmaster size.

Worked like a charm after that - 0 to 600 in minutes.

However, this was never going to be a flipper as it is as risky to drive too hard as its namesake "The Judge"

Or back when I'd bought a Member's Mark gas grill. It was a bit of a beast but I wanted to put it on NG. No kits available so I turned to my trusty charts. Did my calculations. And in a total absent minded move, I miscalculated the BTU of the entire lower burner set to a BTU "per burner". I remember thinking "this isn't looking right" but I looked at my numbers and charts again and modded it to NG. Only to realize as soon as I fired it up and it sounded like a jet engine and a flame thrower had a baby.
Had to acquire all new orifices and start from scratch.....................again. But it WAS spectacular when I fired it up
