I got my First WSM and already a Question.

What do I really have here.
Date code is DZ ... 2008
But as I see it is a 2009 model ? Maybe a Very Early 2009 made in 2008?
Also strange is there is no Weber printed on the Thermometer.

Let me know what you think.

Do I have something rare ?

Thanks.

Did you purchase this new? I have the 22" which I purchased today and it has weber on the thermostat. It also has the serial number on the top vent.

Sorry, I forgot to say that this is a CL find for 180.00 bucks.
Here in The Netherlands this size new is 599.00 bucks!
They also never show up on CL here because of the price.
For the location and the price I got a great deal!
I just thought it was strange with the date code DZ being so early and also the thermometer without the Weber name or smoke range ?

Not sure...but I do know NOW that it reads 40 deg LOW .... That sucks. but on the other hand... that's why my duck came out perfect with crispy skin.
Looks like I have to get a new one to replace it.

I did look at the smoker very good and I have the idea that the last owner NEVER Smoked in it and only used it as a barbecue ?

Most people here are too cheap to replace the thermometer if they think it is not correct... and they don't have a clue on how to test it also.

This tells the story better of why he would sell it. He was not happy with it as a barbecue.
He did say that it takes a ton of charcoal to cook anything.

He told me that his wife bought it for him for a gift.... sounds like a salesman talked her into the most expensive barbecue/smoker they had in stock.
Sure you can barbecue in a smoker...but that's not why they call it a smoker.

There was NO smoke stains on anything... even the grills were shiny chrome and the lid and sides were clean as new. ??

likely someone replaced the thermometer, that looks like some kind of generic thermometer. its pretty normal for lid therms to be off by as much as 50 F even if they are tested to be accurate the temp at that location is not of any real value to you, you want to know the temp at the grate.
