How to season wood?

I came into some pecan wood scraps and would like to know how to season them so they are usable for smoking? And how will I know they are ready for use in my smoker?

The smaller you break the wood down, the faster it will dry out. Once broken down into small pieces like you would use in the WSM, you can start using it pretty fast. I use green/wet wood (apple) all the time, just have to cut back some on the amount used, and make sure it's placed ontop of hot coals to get a clean burn. That said, once broken down into small pieces, a month is all you need to season the wood. Do leave some of it whole though, so it won't dry out as fast for use down the road. It'll last longer (won't dry out too much) that way. HTH
