Before I have been using a bag of Weber Fire Spice, which are nothing more than chunks of hickory. But a buddy had a hickory fall in his yard, and gave me about a cord of wood. it has been sitting, stacked outside in the elements for some time. it has turned grey, even.

Could i use that for smoke wood, or is that a bad idea.

As I type this, it seems like a bad idea. Thoughts?

As long as it's not rotten or full of bugs it should be good. How old is it? If it's really old and dry it might be pretty weak flavor wise.

For years my father used hickory nuts.

The nut has more flavor then the wood. Soak em in water overnight before using and just chunk a few on the coals.

WOnderful flavor.

PS.....dont try it with pecans. Nasty.........
