want to repaint the frame of my ss performer. Its in pretty good shape but just want to make her look like new. Do i need to sand first? What should i use to clean it? tsp? any other prep work help would be appreciated. Should i use flat or gloss black? Do you know it the ss door comes off the top frame? thanks a lot for your replys.
 
A good sand with light grit sand paper will help to smooth out any defects and help the new paint stick. I wouldn't worry about cleaning it with a cleaner unless there is an accumulation of grease on it. If that's the case normal dishwashing liquid like Dawn, or the Orange Clean Pro products can be used to remove it. After degreasing and sanding give it a good wash down, then let it dry and use a tack rag as a final prep (you can get tack rags at Home Depot in the wood staining section). From there paint it with whatever paint you like. I redid a cast iron patio set last year and found the Krylon Fusion did a great job...but you may want to consider a high heat paint since the areas near the kettle might have issues if done with normal paint.

This Guy looks like he repainted his with glossy and it looks pretty sweet to me!
 
My pleasure Corey...my cousin owned an auto body shop when I was a teen and I spent many a summer sanding cars and I'm happy to help.

I'd say something on the finer side, maybe a 400 would be good. You don't want to go too coarse so stay away from 60 or 100. If you can, get something designed for metal or automotive work so it doesn't clog up on you.

Realistically you just want to remove a thin layer of the paint and take away any oxidization that's on the surface so the new paint sticks well. If the paper is too coarse you'll go down the metal and likely remove any primer that may have been applied before the original paint was put on.
 
What Stuart said but wet sand the entire thing with 400-600. Engine enamel comes in gloss black and I think it is good to 500-600 degrees. I would not think it the outside where it attaches would get hotter than that. Follow the directions on the paint for the curing time. My humble opinion.

Yes the stainless steel comes off. It is much easier with it off. I also removed the bowl as well. I used High Heat Grill paint from ACE Hardware. At the time none of it looked like it needed to be sanded, so I just cleaned it with 409. Once I removed the SS, there was a couple spots, but it was too late at that point.

A nice light wet sand is all you need, if you do not sand the new coat of paint will start peeling off in no time. Sanding gives the new coat of paint something to hold on to.
 
thanks for the help guys. Well this morning i got up at 6:30 got it all apart sanded and cleaned. I got first coat of paint on. Its humid as hell out today so it will probably take some time to dry. But it looks brand spanking new. Ill post some pics when she is all done and ready for its maiden voyage. thanks again
