Heat from Pizza Kettle is cracking my stones!

Has any thougth of just getting a 1/8 or 1/4 steel plate cut to fit the Pizza Kettle. I think it's just to direct heat down, so it shouldn't have to be very fancy.

Yep cold rolled mild steel done with a plasma cutter. Easy and cheap. My problem is not the cooking from the top down but rather the bottom up. I'm working with getting enough heat under the stone.

Can anyone recommend a stone that can handle that heat? They sell stones at the Kettle Pizza website that I assume are up to the task, but I figured I'd also ask here.

I'm also using the BGE stone. After making too many pizzas (for my health, if not my enjoyment) it hasn't cracked yet. I get the coals going in the center of the grate (using the Performer's gas assist), push them to the sides, put the KP+grill in place and immediately add the stone so it's going on a cold grill. Don't know if that is actually necessary (the BGE stone is pretty thick) but it can't hurt.
