I was just wondering if when using something other than water if the distance from the shield would have much effect on the bottom grate temp. I have a couple kiln shelves that I was thinking of trying. One of them is 16" and can rest right on the water pan tabs, the other shelves are smaller(in 1" increments) so I'd have to do something to hang them below the bottom grate.
I wasn't to sure about having the kiln shelf within an inch of the bottom grate though. I thought it might be best to actually use 2 shelves seperated by some small 1/2" spacers and 3 or so inches below the bottom grate. This would give twice the mass over a single shelf, while(in my mind) keeping the bottom grate temp slightly more constant due to the air gab between the shelves.
Any thoughts?
