Has anyone moved water pan lower?

Curious if anyone has moved their water pan lower to get it further away from the lower grate and therefore the meat on that grate? My biggest concern is that it would be closer to fire and maybe get too hot. Thought the separation might help with bark on the meat on the lower grate.

Have you thought on just movin the bottom grate up? The top grate will slide down there on an angle, and sits on the bolts not the tabs which gains you about an 1 1/2" in height. You can pick up an extra grate for a 18.5" kettle @ HD or Ace.
If you want more separation you could remove the bolts and add some long leg L brackets.

I've thought about making some brackets similar to what the chrome ones are that come with the unit to move bottom grate up some, or just ordering from weber and cutting them off. Only problem I have with another top grate is the sliding in and out on angle and the potential for a slide off when removing brisket or butt for wrapping.

Gotcha.
You could just part out and get some longer bolts for the original bottom grate to sit up higher. Add a few U bolts for handles and that should do it.

I think your idea of putting some bolts higher is the best idea. That's what I did on the mini.

It's always been my opinion that meat on the lower grate does not get the same smoke as that on the top level so my solution was to add a mid level rack. I did it yesterday and smoked 4 racks of babybacks today. There was no distinguishable difference between the mid and top levels.
