GrillGrates v Weber 9930 SS Grates

Marinated some flanken short ribs as LA Style Kalbi and decided to do a head to head with my new to me GrillGrates on the Vieluxe

I cleaned and seasoned the GG with grapeseed oil all over and let them cool. Preheated both on low then medium (with SS rods - I always cover with disposable aluminum pan to hold heat at grate level) and cooked on medium

Wife immediately asked if I cooked them differently and preferred the GG appearance (thought the regular grates looked drier and tough) even though I did not tell her

Both tasted fine to me though the SS rods were more well done - definitely much more heat with the convection and I had a hard time flipping both sides as they were both sticking

Before pic for comparison:

I'm guessing you meant to say Weber 9930 stainless steel grates and not 9903 vs. grill grates. I personally think grill grates are an abomination and not a legitimate grate choice, but if you like them cool.

GrillGrates are awesome sauce for a gas grill imo.

That's because gas grills primarily cook by convection (hot air). Which is not great as a heat energy source for many types of outdoor grilling. A gas grill is made much better by adding some radiation and/or conduction capability. Hence why many high end grills add an IR burner. Hence the strong trend toward using some kind of griddle for outdoor cooking.

I still use regular grates sometimes. But only when I want to be cooking almost exclusively with convection heat energy. Which is not most of the time.

Larry is a long time GG hater. I'm a long time GG lover. Especially for using the flat side for searing via induction.

I'd suggest you read what Meathead says and make up your own mind.

Meathead: "GrillGrates is the single best improvement to most gas grills. If you own a gas grill, I cannot recommend GrillGrates more enthusiastically as a replacement for your factory grates or on top of your factory grates for all your cooking. They simply make gas grills work better."

I picked up a small set of GG at Karms store recently, They work very well. I think they are 12"x17". I use them on my 3 burner Spirit. it reduces the risk of fire on the meat, Glad they came with the spatula cause burgers if thin tend to droop, knockem if you want to but I have nothing but good to say about them.

Flat side is great for burgers. Either full smashburger mode or just to get them seared before finishing on grates/rails.
