Friends,

I have a 1995 performer with gas ignition, which I never use by the way. Today I was cleaning it up for a move and noticed something. Underneath the storage lid, the stainless panel, there is a sheet of grey stuff flaking off slowly. For the life of me I don't know what it is; I bought this grill used.

My best guess is that it was some kind of film on the stainless to protect it in shipping and assembly that didn't get removed and has baked on. Underneath it is stainless, so it shouldn't be any problem to remove it, but can anyone clue me in to what it was to begin with? I'll be taking a putty knife to it at the new home. Thanks for any insights.

Try heating it with a heat gun or blow dryer.. See if it melts.
Then try a solvent likve WD-40.. Then a plastic paint scraper/
You are correct, it was a protective film on the SS. Someone was too lazy to remove it.

Tbounds I see you said you don't use your gas assist....does it not work.Man if mine didn't have the gas assist it would just be another kettle grill....the gas assist has made it the almost perfect grill/smoker.
