Hey, everybody -- my brilliant and beautiful wife realized that my life would be (more) complete if I had a WSM 18.5, so now I do. One quick question I have not found here despite trying to poke about with the search engine: is the handle for the lid supposed to screw tightly together or be a bit loose? Mine's loose but the screw feels fully tight and I'm puzzled.

Thanks and happy smoking!

First, welcome aboard.
Second, on my WSM22, the handles were tight.
if you are concerned about them, call Weber and they will send you new ones.
your life will be improved with a WSM. You will probably gain more friends. Enjoy!!!

your wife is truly awesome for getting you that wonderful present!

Jim, I just got one today :) and was thinking the same thing while putting it together. I remembered that my performer handle went on "tight" so I just kept tightening it until the gap closed and it fit snug. Made sure my screwdriver was the right fit before proceeding.

BTW, good to see we have another NM poster too. Keep 'em rolling.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I took Bob's advice and called Weber for a replacement and with that on the way figured I could take Ted's advice and just crank like a maniac until it either tightened or broke. It tightened. :-) Now I just have to lay in all the other stuff I need for a first smoke. (Insert maniacal laughter here.)

Hey Jim, after that thing is all together and usable, let's see what the heck you'll cook on it... we really love photos....
Welcome to our addiction!:wsm:

OK, so I finally cleared my calendar and broke in the new member of the family. I figured I'd start simple and just do up a pork butt. I went with the Renowned Mr. Brown recipe and from start to finish took not a single picture because I am a moron. I do, on the other hand, have four pieces of paper with meat and smoker temperatures taken every 15 minutes from 0825 to 2330. Mother of pearl it was good. And tomorrow, salmon.

Welcome to the group Jim. Learn to cook on the thing before adding gadgets and don't overthink your bbq.
