Just wondering....what is the advantage of nickel plates grates vs stainless steel? Why do you get one of each when you buy a WSM?

In the WSM i dont really care. Aslong as it can hold food

"Why do you get one of each when you buy a WSM?" - are you sure? I think both of mine is nickel plated.(the lower grate is in the basement almost never use it)

Doesent really matter. But for a grill i want a heavy duty(thermal mass) grate. I love my CI grate in the kettle.

Daniel is right on.

The stainless steel will last much longer than the plated grates(not rust out as fast), and I believe all WSM'S come with both plated grates which will last many years in a smoker. Now for grilling I would prefer cast iron.

I use the grates that come with the WSM's and really haven't given them much thought. Only grate I've ever changed was I bought, several years ago, a hinged grate for my 22 1/2" One Touch and a hinged grate for the '70's era 22 1/2" kettle at my Dad's house.

Both are nickel plated on the WSM.

Stainless will last much longer and to me they clean up much easier than nickel plated.

But I think right now the only grates you can get in stainless are the 22" with hinged sides and the 26" OTG comes with stainless as well. At $125 for the 26", this grate better last me a long time before I replace it.

For a 22" grill the stainless is worth it to me. But for a WSM, the nickel plated is just fine.

after spending a lot on stuff that is coated and then rusts before yer eyes i have now gotten to the point were i will only get ss . if i had done that in the first place i would have saved a lot of money. as to grates i would go ss. if i really needed cast iron for some reason i would throw a ci grate on top of the ss grate for that cook. i'm not a sear mark fan so i'm not worried about that.

I use a Craycort CI for grilling on the performer. I have two 18.5" SS grates for the WSM and two 22.5" SS grates for the cajun bandit.
