Genesis 1 grate question

I'm looking for some grates other then the 1 set of porcelain enameled ones weber has listed for my grill part #7525. I seen at home depot they have weber cast iron part #7638, but it's listed for spirit 300 series only.

The dimensions for #7638 are 17.37 x 11.87 where as #7525 is 17.4 x 11.8. I think 7638 should fit even though it's not for my grill. Has anyone used different grates for their early genesis or what are your thoughts?

What Genesis model do you have? Cast iron ones and stainless steel ones are all available from Weber or go one step better and get a set from RCPlanebuyer on Ebay. You won't go wrong. They are heavy 3/8" SS welded rods and while spendy are a lifetime investment. If you have an older style Genesis (I, II, III or 1000, 2000, 3000 etc) the grates might be a little more obscure since Weber has not produced those for quite some time so if you want the stamped (U shaped) SS grates or the cast iron ones you may need to order from Weber

I have a genesis I. Weber's website only lists one number. I seen the cast iron ones in stock at HD so no shipping fee. I was looking at the SS ones but i dunno, i did get my flavorizer bars from him.

Weber as well as multiple aftermarket parts sources indicate the 7638 grates will fit the Genesis 1. I would post the Weber link here that confirms this, but I'm not sure about the rules of this site concerning commercial links. if you look up your grill in the Weber Site schematics section, and click the additional parts button they are listed at the bottom for PCI grates. hope this helps, I'm planning on a set for my 1000 soon.

Thanks for the info! I didnt bother looking further on weber since it only listed 7525. Well i should be set now, new ss flavorizers, burners, regulator, and igniter on the way.

Bob i hope so, this is my first real grill even though it's used 250$ for new guts, and 20$ in paint only the quarter of the price then a new grill.

I got the cast iron ones from HD. Weber says not to season them others say TO season them. Not sure?

My Genesis 1100 came with the cast iron grates, and while I didn't "season" them per se, you'll definitely want to keep them oiled between uses so they don't rust (just like a cast iron skillet). A layer of seasoning should develop as you use them. All that being said, I ended up buying rcplanebuyer's welded rod grates and haven't looked back

Though it does help a little. I have the same set and when they were new I did a break in by getting them hot and generously oiling them. They work very well and almost anything just slips right off (unless it's got a sugary sauce/glaze) but even then it releases quite well. I just brush and re-oil occasionally
