Gasket applied to door or smoker body?

I took a different path for sealing the door area. My door had some good size gaps across the top of my 18" smoker. I added a gasket across the bottom back side lip that touches the body and the back side that touches the body of the smoker. Around the latch I just went strait across and hope it won't come off when I latch the door. This is just an experiment because I really didn't want to put it on the body of smoker.

Thought I saw a stainless door that was available for this 18 and 22 inch smoker? Anyone have a any info on this door?

Thanks,
Steve

My factory door fit way better than the CB door even with the better locking lever latch.

That doesn't sound right at all.

First off, I'm relatively certain that roughly 50% of us received Weber doors from the factory that were already bent/half-destroyed. I know mine was on the 22 ---- all 4 corners bent, a dent in the door, and this was all deep in the packaging and certainly not an open-box item.

Secondly, the CB door is made of stainless steel and is pre-formed and quite rigid, so there's 2 possibilites:

1. Your WSM is out of round and now you're seeing it.
2. Your CB door is out of round.

I've heard of #1 quite a bit, but have never heard of a CB door being out of round. If you're absolutely sure that's the issue, you should contact them and get it replaced free of charge, though you should probably see if you can bend it yourself (it's rigid, but not totally unbendable). Mine barely leaks, and only at the very top (something I'm taking care of this week w/ a gasket kit). It should fit very tightly with the Southco latch.

Where on the doorframe/opening are your leaks located?

It was number 2.

It was leaking half way between the latch and corner on one top side. The door was not a symmetrical curve. The out side edge / corner on the side that was leaking was a sharper curve. Also the step that locks in the door on the bottom wasn't deep enough. First time I locked the latch down it preyed on the bottom of the door opening and flexed it enough that the enamel flaked off.

CB did make it right by issuing a refund. After the all around bad fit and enamel flaking I wasn't interested in trying another. Especially when I was replacing a perfectly good Weber door just for the cool factor.
