Gas burner in a Char-Broil offset firebox smoker?

Has anyone ever tried this? I found one of these smokers on the side of the road that some college kids were abandoning about three years ago. As a charcoal smoker, it is terribly inefficient and requires constant attention. Those issues have been addressed here before. Yesterday, I got bored and started tinkering. I took a propane burner off of an old turkey frying rig. I ran it through the air vent door to the firebox and closed the vent door tight around the metal neck of the burner. I fired it up and with with only a couple of adjustments, it maintains any temperature I want. There is a ton of food capacity in this thing and I have it rigged with two levels of cooking grates. I have not cooked anything with it yet, but was just wondering if anyone else has done or seen anything similar to this.

This summer i started smoking on my 22.5 weber kettle and made some deliciuos ribs. The next weekend I got a ton of ribs at a great price and conned my wife into letting me buy a smoker. I hastily ran out and spent a bunch of money on a cabinet style charcoal smoker. I got it to work nicely after messing around and failing a few times. I got it to work ok but it was a pain in the neck, ashes would always choke out the fire. Then i found a used WSM. So I had 2 smokers.I cut out a circle in the bottom of the cabinet and put it on the turkey fryer burner. It works fine. I'd rather use the WSM. it feels like cheating with gas.

C,

There is a company that makes burners for just that purpose. They even include a spot for a juice can to put wood in for smoke.

I personally have not used one, but it looks cool. There is a link here that I came across recently, but I don't remember which thread.
