fresh apple wood

my friend just cut down an apple tree like yesterday and gave me one log. i cut it up into chunk/baseball size pieces. how long till i can use it. or do i have to wait at all

Most wood needs to be seasoned for a year to give it adequate time to dry. Otherwise you will have an extreme amount of smoke since the wood would be "green".

If you have cut it into baseball size pieces, it should be ok to use in about 3 months. Split it into pieces half that size if you want to be sure.
