Sure I've used Maple and cedar in woodworking projects. I think cedar is what people typically lean towards for redoing wood slats and handles. It's fairly long-lasting and rot resistant. It's a good value. Well known for siding and fencing. Performs pretty well outdoors.

It's interesting they started with cedar. It probably became too expensive. I think maple is a lot harder than cedar but I don't know. Has anyone had experience woodworking either?
I've made handles and slats out of both woods. My personal favorite is mahogany though. It's a great trade off between originality and better looks than either cedar or maple.Screenshot_20230918-232252.pngIMG_20230921_061219257.jpg

Wow! Looks beautiful Steve. A few questions - Is that a 1/4" round router bit for the edges, or maybe 3/16"? Also, what is used to finish mahogany - I assuming no stain but varnish? Finally, where do you get mahogany - do you order it or buy it at a local lumber yard? Thanks

3/16". Those slats have old masters gel stain and spar urethane finish. The next time I do them I'm going to try using beeswax as a finish, I think it will look just as good and a lot easier to do. I've always been able to find mahogany locally at woodworking stores around me. I guess you could order it but I like to look at every board first before I buy it.

Josh and Steve - I'm assuming you both have planers? I just checked on FB - lots of nice wood out there at good prices but it would have to be cut and milled a bit. I have a router table, 16" band saw and a radial arm saw (that needs a new platform) but no planer. I might be able to use a neighbors though. Otherwise I may find something close that's dimensional. But there seems to be better value in leftover wood on Marketplace.

That's where I get most of my wood. I'm always on the lookout for IPE Ironwood (Brazilian walnut) or American Walnut is my second choice.
I really like the grill you did with the Ipe, but that would definitely be a one off for me as far as grills go. I made some handles out of American walnut before as well as hickory that I really liked the looks of too.

Some of it is free!
