Free Cover Question

Years ago when I bought my 18.5 WSM I was really excited that it came with a cover, but since then I have often wondered why Weber includes a cover for the smokers but does not for a $350 performer. Even the new 14.5 at $199 comes with a cover.

Anyone have any reasoning behind this?
 
I've only seen free covers with the smokers, maybe because the way smokers are designed they would take in a lot more water then the grills????
 
I agree with you Josh. Bought my grill yesterday and had to order a cover off Amazon last night since they were out of them at the store. For the price, it should be included.
 
I now have four Weber's and a mini ( just bought a E320 NG off CL) so now I have to buy another Weber cover which unfortunately will go south in the AZ sun in a year or two. But to your point it doesn’t make sense not to give you a cover. It protects the grill and it keeps Weber out of warranty claims.
 
It is odd they deem it worthwhile for the smoker but not the performer, especially since the old SS performers did come with a cover. Perhaps they have so much profit built into the smokers they want to add a bit more value to justify the price.

I think you hit the nail on the head. At some point they'll remove them from the WSM package and sell as an add on item. They KNOW they'll sell the smoker regardless, and any cover sales is just extra profit.
 
I have also noticed that (at least on Amazon) they do not sell the covers for the smokers by themselves. I'm sure through Weber you can get it, but they don't seem as available as the other covers.
 
I have four kettles including a Performer and the WSM. All have Weber covers. The 18-1/2" WSM cover is a pain to use despite cutting the elastic. I've replaced covers on two of them over the years. That said, the next time I replace covers it will be with the Classic Accessories products. They look like a better unit and more robust. Just my two pennies worth.............

I found the cover for my 18.5 one touch silver fits far better on my 18.5 WSM than does the cover that came with it. However, the WSM cover fits almost too tightly on the one touch silver. If I need to buy another cover for the WSM, it will be the one touch silver cover. Hope that explanation wasn't too confusing!!!
