Foul smell from wood burn?

anyone know what might have causes a sooty, foul smelling wood burn for me? I cut a limb from a live citrus orange tree. The diameter was 4 inches and 1-1.5 inches thick, and the wood had dried for several months. When i used it for smoke wood in the weber, the smoke ended up getting dark, sooty and had a bad odor. I am reluctant to try it again even though i had a few successful burns with similar pieces but if i wasn't there, it could have ruined my meat

What type of fuel did you use? The reason I ask is I notice that occasionally when I don't pick out the uncarbonized pcs from RO lump.

well, it has been a couple of months and i didn't think about the fuel but i almost always use kingsford but may have had some stubbs mixed in, if anything

How much grease/soot buildup did you have in your WSM?

I only ask because I set mine up for high heat grilling the other night (too hot here to cook inside), and I must have had a build-up, because in a few minutes my back yard looked and smelled like an oil rig blowout.

But it's really clean now.
