Foraging!

My daughter and I did a little foraging yesterday, came home with about 4 lbs of chanterelles! She's working at a camp in the woods near Pescadero, and there are four nice chanterelle patches less than 100 yds from her back door! :)

Made up an omelette for lunch, and thinking some risotto for dinner.... :)

I love wild mushrooms. All kinds (well not all kinds :D). I remember as a kid, my grandfather and my middle uncle through their construction contacts knew about woods, open fields, and forest preserves all around Chicago and in a couple of the very nearby burbs where edible wild mushrooms could be found. And oh boy were they ever good. Fragrant, nice meaty/chewy texture. Absolutely wonderful. Today? I don't have a clue and I know there are books and such, and when I go hiking I do see some fungi I am sure are (well almost) that are edible but I don't dare.
I recall a legend of some ruler or such. Who's servant or such was upset with him. So he fixed him a meal of poison mushrooms. The "victim" was so thrilled to see the wonderful meal he ate with abandon. Then in the throws of expiring due to the shrooms he thanked the orderly for at least making his last meal delicious

Yeah, foraging for mushrooms is best done with a lot of experience (yours, or someone else's.....whom you trust!) In this particular case, these are known chanterelle patches, which my daughter and co-workers have been eating for a few weeks. Chanterelles are about the only mushroom that I trust myself to identify for certain, too.

I may dehydrate some of these, since we'll likely not get through them all before they are no longer as tasty.
