Flowbee

A coworker of mine, back in the early 90's used to cut her husband and son's hair with one of those things. If they're still selling them, I guess that they work...

I took up two new hobbies/skills during Covid.

First, I finally got a WSM smoker to go along with the gasser. Second, I taught myself how to cut my own hair. But just clippers for me -- no Flowbee. Haircuts occur on the back deck or in the garage. Not inside the house.

I'm pretty good at it. For a family wedding recently, I broke down and got my first barber haircut in years. My wife didn't think it looked any better than my DIYs. Super convenient. The key is to do it regularly (every 3-4 weeks) so it always looks about the same. Kind of like mowing the lawn.

FYI, hair on your head grows about 1/8th inch per week. So a #4 (4/8ths inch) today will turn into a #7 (7/8ths inch) in 3 weeks.

At least one of our local dog groomers uses something similar in principle, although many times more expensive. It works great for dogs...I can't see why the human version wouldn't work equally as well.

My wife started cutting my hair with some electric clippers and a 1/2" guide during the pandemic, and has kept doing that- quite the change for me as someone who used to wear bandana handkerchief headbands to keep my center-parted hair out of my eyes! You are correct, the key is cutting it about every 4 weeks.

I've been cutting my hair since 2011 with clippers, blade guards and a detailer but I watch too many movies and see actors with a hair style a little longer than what I can achieve with the guards and wonder if i would like a longer length. I've pondered this for at least a couple years and decided to order one this week.

I'll let you know if I look like George Clooney after using it :D

I think the principle is a good one and you've got a head start (pun intended!) by already knowing how to go about cutting your own hair. I'm sure you will get acceptable results quickly and steadily improve as time goes on...watch out, George!

I first learned about the Flowbee during the pandemic, and of course they were sold out when I looked for one shortly after George publicly admitted in 2020 that he had been using one "for 25 years", saying it only took him about 2 minutes to cut his hair.

That's quality work!!

Looks about the same as my cut. I use the regular store clippers with the guards.

Sides and back are a number 4 or 5. I leave the top longer. I just trim that free hand, which is pretty easy to do.

Was it easy to use? How would you rate it vs what you've been using?
I am quicker with the clippers than what I was with my first attempt here but it did not feel awkward to use. If I were to want a shorter length on the sides I have a feeling my clipper guards offer a wider range of offerings. The Flowbee will cut significantly closer than what I did here but I think the range is more limited.

My goal for having bought it was to see if I might like a little bit longer hair length for something different. But for my initial cut, I wanted to see how it compared to what I've been using and I feel it yielded decent results.

By the way--and I don't say this to suggest I feel anyone is going to buy one because of this thread--but if anyone is interested at some point in time, the folks selling the kit on Amazon are at 2X the price from Flowbee direct. Also: Flowbee offers 1/4" straight and angled adapters as accessories (not included in the kit), which you might want to consider.
