First time Genesis C

Hi Everyone. I'm making a short trip tomorrow to take a look at what I believe is a Genesis C ? This would be my first weber gasser. I've always had the cheap Wal-mart jobs that last 2 seasons. Looking forward to having something for life. Anything in particular I should be aware of? I think I have em talked down to $75.

Hi Scott, it looks like there may be issues with the grease pan and catcher on that one.

The frame looks ok.

The grill is very dirty from use which tells me it wasn’t maintained well.

I would be ok buying it without the tank for around $20 to $40. I’d be more comfortable taking for free.

Keep in mind it may take around $200 to refurbish the grill and a fair amount of labor.

The owner has lined the big grease tray with aluminum foil which probably means it has holes in it. Since that by itself is a $50 part I don't think I would go more than $40 for the grill. There's also a good chance the grill needs new burner tubes, flavorizer bars, and grates.

Thanks for the advice. I may keep looking. The work doesn't scare me. I love a good project.

I actually don’t even see a grease tray at all. It might just be the foil, which would be wild. Also looks to be missing the Catch Pan itself for the grease tray ($15-20)

Either way though, sometimes people simply line the grease tray to “protect it”, and if it does exist (hard to tell in that photo), it might be in perfect shape.

Since you’re not afraid of a project, I’d argue that you won’t need new burners at all (I’ve never had a Silver B that actually NEEDED new burners). Just wire wheel them and spray a garden hose inside them to flush. The burner tubes crossover bar could be shot though, and you may need to replace ($10).

The grates look like the Stamped Stainless Steel and you can easily wash them and wire wheel them if you want to get them back to like new.

The Flavorizer Bars are hit or miss. If they’re stainless steel, you have a pretty good chance to still use them.

I would say $70 is fine if it has a grease tray without holes.

Also, a lot of times the side burner on those older models will have a huge yellow flame. This is due to insect webs or nests inside the tube. You can disconnect it and use a pipe cleaner and garden hose to spray it out to get it back to working like new if you need to.

The work doesn't scare me either, I pick up grills like that to restore fairly often. You just don't want to overpay for them when you know going in it will need new parts, as well as paint and supplies if your going to do a really nice job.

Mu first thought was the foil was a liner. It didn't occur to me it might be rusted out.

Also the top of the lid may or may not have severe "Weber Fade" which cannot be corrected. It's strictly aesthetic, but could bother you if you want it to be "nice and shiny black". It's hard to tell in the photo if it's just a reflection or not.

What a rabbit hole this is, and I really appreciate all the advice already! I don't necessarily need a "show piece". I'm just wanting something that will last. A few hundred invested in a "vintage" one is still a savings over the new $1000 3 burner genesis I was looking at. I's about a 1.5 hour drive round trip so I'm wondering if I'm better off waiting for one closer.

Slide out bottom pan is $50
Burners and SS flav bars $40 to $45
Drip catch pan assembly about $20

So about $120 in parts to handle that one.

Or keep looking. Here is an older Genesis 3000, with a deep cookbox and more classic styling. It looks like it is missing the left swing up table, but maybe the seller has it. It is in Little Rock listed for $175

I would try and get that price down. Personally, I prefer the older deep box x000s over a Silver B cook box but they are very similar.

I've actually sent this guy a few messages. The red would look good next to my red smoker!

Is there any.. cooking advantages to the deeper box?

One thing that I like of the Silver's as apposed to X000's is more readily available parts if you are missing any.
Although X000's are "classic".

A few years ago I would have agreed with that statement, but I think we have come to the point where parts availability between the two are about equal as even the supply of many Silver parts has dried up. You can still buy all the basics for both grills and I think we're splitting hairs as to the actual difference in the way they both cook. I would rather have a Genesis 1000 than a Silver B, but I really like the Genesis Gold models a lot also.

I picked up the same grill for free with the same issues last night. I done them before and have extra parts so I will be ok.

I prefer the newer Genesis C and B frames. The old x000’s and B and C’s are kind of rickety. I usually weld the frames to stiffen them up.

But if you like wood and red lids the old ones are the way to go

Well.. I ended up talking her into $40 with the tank. There's some rust and I almost walked away, but I made the drive and worse case have some spare parts and a project to learn from.

There is some "weber fade" on the top. The Front of the frame has quite a bit of rust and probably the part that concerns me the most. Burner tubes seem ok. Flavorizers are shot. SS grates are good, one has one loose rod on one side. The drip tray is there but the catch tray is gone. The slides on the bottom for the drip tray seem pretty rough (rusty), especially the right one. The white walls on the wheels have seen better days. The thermoset tables are dirty but overall I think they'll clean up nicely. The tank hanger mechanism looks to be completely rusted.
