First Searwood hiccup - winter edition

Went to warm up the Searwood today. Set to 350 and went back inside to prep dinner. I opened the app a few minutes later, and to my surprise the Searwood was showing offline.

I went outside, and she was off.

I powered it back on, set the temp using the dial, pressed the dial to initialize start up… it shut off again and turns back on. Rinse and repeat 5 more times.

It’s -20 C (4 F) Here in Manitoba, Canada… which is nowhere near as cold as it gets here.

Anyone else experiencing start up issues this winter?

Sorry to hear about this. Hopefully you get it sorted out. Is there anything in the manual about operating temps? You're not interrupting an update by rinsing and repeating, are you?

No updates as of yet, and my guess is either it’s condensation as mentioned - or - simply frozen in some capacity that the PID isn’t able to send info the motherboard. It’s supposed to be bit warmer today. Worst case we’ll bring it inside and let it thaw out.

Last night after being unable to fire up my grill, I sent an email to customer service more as an FYI. I received as call seconds ago from”Brandon” at Weber. This is just a reminder, to me, why I love their products so much. He’s sending me an email and in turn, I’ll send the video and photos I took.

No error messages, nothing overly interesting to report, but Weber still wanted as much information as they could receive to try and diagnose this issue. I learned that this machine was built to withstand extremely cold temps, even here in Canada, and should work as required.

We talked about the extension cord, power source and whether there could have been ice build up near where the Searwood cord and extension cord connect. (There wasn’t in this case.) The internal cables are designed in such a way to function in the cold.

Hopefully I can figure out whatever caused this to prevent it from happening again, and of course to share with other members who might experience the same problem. I’ll have a direct email to liaise with Brandon going forward.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this.

Hope you can figure it out for the future. I smoked some burgers last night here in NJ. Grill started up and showed a temp of 15 degrees, which is not nearly close to your -20 !!!! She ran like a champ though.
