A great tool that is sometimes overlooked for starting lump, or charcoal for that matter, is a Turkey Fryer burner. These items are fairly inexpensive, and if purchased as a package, the Turkey fryer is also great. I just load up a Weber Chimney full of lump, set it on the turkey fryer burner, light, and let it run for about 2 minutes. Then remove the chimney and set it in the kettle. Fire is ready for grilling or smoking within just a short time. This is a great item to ask for birthday/father/mother day gift, as the price is fair, and it will last forever. Shoot for the high BTU rating, about 160,000 should cover it.

Jim, you are correct, they work great. Another tool we use is a fire stick.

You can buy a 500,000 BTU Weed Torch from Harbor Freight or Northern Tool for about $20. They just hook right up to a 20 or 40 lb bottle of gas. They work great, I also use it occasionally for burning the thick crud off the racks of my Klose pit. but only when they are really bad.

I bought a wheel-type wire brush attachment for my power drill that also works great for this.

I didn't have anybody available to take pictures while I was using it. It scared the heck out of my dog, so I put him in the house while I was using the torch. It has the turbo trigger which you can squeeze all the way, half way, or to whatever degree you like. When you squeeze it all the way...it is like an F-16 fighter engine kicking in it's afterburner. I couldn't believe how much heat and flame it puts out, kind of scary. There is another model that costs about $25 that has a starter switch built onto it.

It has probably 3-5 times the output that you would need, but that came in very handy for cleaning messy pit racks. You could easily start charcoal or logs with this torch in a matter of seconds.

As you can see we already have one, was asking for a couple of others who might be interested. How about getting Mom to take the picture for you?

Sure, next time I use it. Might be a while though. I just started a new roll of film and have 34 shots to go before the roll is finished.

I heard about these torches on other bbq forums. Everybody had great things to say about them. I took there word for it and took a chance and bought one. They are every bit as powerful as the people said they were. Actually, they are more powerful than I expected.

I figured these people knew what they were talking about since they had already been using them on their grills etc. Didn't bother to ask them to take pictures for me to see it in action. I had already seen them used years ago for their original purpose...to burn weeds and to melt ice, but the ones I saw years ago didn't have the turbo-blaster option...which makes it very good.

Harbor Freight is very good, if you don't like the torch, you can send it back. Only a $12.99 investment.
