Hi All,

I saw a video of someone using Fire Blox to start their WSM. It sems like a cleaner way than using the chimney. Does anyone have experience with these and know where to get them in Toronto? I can't find them or anyone who will deliver to Canada.

Thanks,

JDH

Hi, James. Used t be able to get them at Canadian Tire. But, i think chimney is way better. For one thing, you're not worrying about chemicals and any residual flavours. The other thing is that it allows you to dump the list coals - exactly as many as you think right, on the unlit and wood - the number you think right as well. My advice is to stay with the chimney.

Thanks Mike. I'm waiting on a Stoker and pre-worrying about controlling the initial temp on start up to avoid overshoots. I seem to have issues using too much fuel to start now and working backwards to get back to my desired temp. I thought the Fire Blox would help but didn't realize they were chemical. I'll just have to learn to use less in the chimney.

Start with less coals and you can always add more lit if needed. I never use more than 3/4 chimney lit unless I'm doing High Heat or Chicken roasting then I go with a full chimney and vents wide open. If I'm smoking a salmon or something like that I use 1/2 chimney or less since not much cold mass in the smoker.

Rock's suggests no more than 1/4 chimney of lit using MM so you don't overshoot with the stoker. I always find the chimney looks so empty that I end up throwing more in just to cover the coils. This is why I spike early.
