Looks Fantastic Kendall!

my only concern is: the nice wood handles get "gunked" up... 'specially the 22" lid handle while it sits above the access door with smoke coming out...

i like the plastic handles cuz they clean up nicely. Like to save the wood for the kettle grills.

Hey, good start, Kendall! And they look so purdy!

But surely you don't think this is all you want to do with your WSMs! Even if you don't do anything else, I think the door prop mod is a "must do".

Hey Kendall, you an awesome couple there, the best of both worlds. I just bought a new 22.5 but in reality I think I should have went with the 18.5. We don't entertain, the familyh is grown up and I don't Cater. An 8 lb. roast on the 22 looks awfully lonely and the mileage is not as good.

Gary,
Understand, but you will be very happy when you smoke a whole packer or 3 or more racks of ribs. They are much easier on a 22 since the 18's grates make it much harder to deal with due to the smaller size.

Sorry, but for that occasional large smoke, the 18.5 is just fine. I've done all these and more at one session. The packer was 17.5 lbs. and I could have handled larger. It's all a matter of techniques.

In fact, in this situation, I would be sorely tempted to put my 22 up for sale and buy a good, rarely used 18.5 to replace it. Or at least search hear on TVWBB for ways to shrink the charcoal ring to improve the mileage (use 18.5 ring, fire brick, fabricated, etc.)

Gary you may want to consider building a Mini WSM.. look in the Portable forum

Rich: to each his own....I don't consider a full packer or 3 racks of ribs an "occasional large smoke". And I have done them all as well in one session, but it doesn't mean that the 18 is the ideal size. I thoroughly enjoy smoking, but it is hard to find time to do it with everything else in my life, so making things easier, quicker, and more efficient really enables me to smoke more. When I bought my 18 there was no 22 option. So I had to deal with the 18 size issues for many years.

Maybe the 18 is a better size for Gary, you, and many others. But it doesn't mean it is the better size for me and many others as well. All I was doing was pointing out some benefits of the bigger 22 to help him look at more of the pros. Then he can decide which one is better for him.

Thanks for all the input. I have done a number of things since this post. I found exactly the 18.5 you are referring to. Only smoked on Sundays by a little old lady! 2006 used twice not event coated inside just like new so I have been busy gunking it up. The woman could not get used to it. It was a 1/2 inch out of round. I fixed that easy enough with a pipe clamp.

I also built a new charcoal ring using a Weber 14" charcoal grate and welded seven inches of expanded metal on the sides. I am thinking less surface area, more height "may" mean less fuel consumption. Right now I can see a big difference not only in their size but in the amount of air flowing through them. I'm inclined to think the 18 is the right size for me only because we never cook the amounts I would have to in order to achieve cost effieciency. There is a place up here were I can get 8-12 lb packers so that should be big enough. Doing my first one early tomorrow.

Gary,

Sounds perfect! Great job and great decision for you! I wish you lived closer....I would offer to buy that 22 from you.

Good luck and enjoy! If you do a bunch or ribs on the 18, then putting an inverted rack on top of the top rack works wonderful!
