E310 lid panel

The only question I have that I can’t find an answer to is if the inside of the Lid side panel should be black or grey. I am guessing grey (bare metal) but don’t want to take some coating off that’s supposed to be there so figured I would ask here first. Thanks for any help or advice!
 
Bare aluminum. Gray. The black is burned on carbon. No real need to remove it unless you are selling the grill though.
