Dual Butt Cook Started - Some Problems

Just started two 6LB butts. One to stay home (son needs food) one to travel to Cape Cod. I was all set up to crank up the Digi II, but alas - problem with the power connector!! Drat! Really love this thing for controlling temps. I also had an HD aluminum foil "gasket" around the mid section since I found after repeated cooks and one at night that I have a slight leak or out of round condition. Proven finally that after many cooks I have never been able to extinguish the fire by closing all vents.

So I was all ready to go in auto mode, fire started, gasket in place Digi II set up and working. Came back out to place the butts and Digi II was off. Played with power connection and got intermittant success and then finally AFU.

Dropped back - shut down the vents, put a gallon of water in the pan and set up the Maverick. Stopped the temps on the way up to 250 deg at the grate 225 at the dome and placed the butts.

So we'll see how it goes. Should be good to go all manual again to see if I still have it

Going to check around 180 for done and go as high as 190 (as usual) and foil/place in cooler till they drop to 140.

Gasket should help considerably in keeping the temps controlled and down where I want them without the Digi II as a compensator.

Ray try pulling the plug out of the Digi Q and then reinsert it and make sure it 'clicks', there was a problem with them but it was because they were not getting pushed in far enough. Hope that works for you, otherwise give Bob a call at Guru, they're good people.

Yep that's what I was doing. Had to hold it in a certain position to keep it working. Then finally couldn't keep it on. Did the insert/reinsert till clicks bunches of times. I actually had to do that previous (make sure it was seated). But this time had to actually hold it with some pressure at and angle. Push it in till it clicks, lights would come on then would go out after letting go of the plug.

At least I'm not doing a night cook. Chugging away nicely at 250.

Digi II out to BBQ Guru for repair. It would be nice if they could get it back to me for the Holiday cook, fingers crossed.

Manual mode working just fine though. Chugging with water at a steady 250-255 grate temp. Meat probe at 171 deg. So just waiting for the plateau to hit.

Concentrated on not doing anything major. NO lid removal period so far. Only opened the side door to add some water. Play with the vents a little now and then. That's about it. Using all lump as usual. Two Weber chimney of unlit with a couple chunks of pecan and apple, and started with a half chimney of lit lump.

Really nice to have that fan, but also nice to get back to manual for a change. It's been a long time since that pan actually saw water

Butts came off at 6:30 and in the cooler. Down to about 160 or so. I'll pull at 140.

BBQ Guru - gave me an RMA for the Digi II. Already on it's way to them. Should get there in a day, since they are right "next door" so to speak.

Hoping they will cut me a break and get a replacement out or fix it right away so I have it to use for the multi cook for the big part coming up on the 4th weekend

Otherwise I'll just have to stay with "manual mode" for awhile. Not so bad. Sure do like the convenience though on all day cooks where I need to run errands, etc.

I thought that you would have just drove over there and get the fix while you wait service since you are close to them. Glad your butt cook went well for you.

You know I was tempted!! But got it back yesterday. These guys were great and simply replaced the board and turned it around quickly. Called them Tuesday and they told me it was already in the mail as next day delivery.

Oh - and no charge.

Vacation plans got interrupted up around Norwalk Connecticut (long story, let's just say I had to buy a car). So I still have all the pork butt for the party on Saturday (vac sealed and in the freezer). Cooking some ribs today for the Phillies tailgate at 3, then more ribs on tomorrow for the party.

BTW Nice pic of the HD on your other post. Got a '65 Pan I am finally getting to a shop for restoration in September.

Thanks Ray, Email me a pic of the Pan sometime before it goes in. I'd love to see a before and after.
