i wonder if anyone has tried using a 11 x 7 stainless steel cake pan for a drip pan that wouldn't need replacing, just cleaning?

I use one almost all the time. Many times I put about 36 oz. of water or so in it to aid in clean up. Just used one for ribs this afternoon in my 98 Mastertouch.

seems like the thing to do. those drip pans are pretty expensive compared to how long they last. also, i thought of recycling my spent fireplace firewood into charcoal for the weber. ended up going to a gas insert instead. couldnt see hauling the coals out every day and going to the store every couple of weeks and re-buying it. getting cheap in my old age.thanks for your response.
