Double kettle smoker design

If you look at my avatar, you can see how I have an 18 1/2 and the original platinum kettle on a shared carriage. I am considering using an inverted washtub with ductwork from one to the other. I think this would make for pretty consistent cold smoke.
Should I need heat, use snake method in the larger, continuing smoke from the smaller?
Opinions.
This is still a "Rube Goldberg" concept at the moment but, I like the theory and it should not be miserably expensive. Two washtubs and a piece of dryer duct, forty bucks?
