Dial Thermometer Calibration.
Just cal'd my 2 Dial thermometers. Very easy to do. Put the tip in boiling water and adjust for 212 Deg F by using the nut on the back side. You must also consider altitude. I found the chart here on this site.

I've always been told to check in ice water due to the variables that affect boiling point temp.

Tel tru (probably the best dial thermo IMHO) makes a calibrator for their dials: http://www.teltru.com/s-46-calibrator.aspx Kinda pricey in my opinion - boiling water and ice water probably work as well.
