Darn WSM door

B een having a lot of trouble in my practicing for the comp I was in controlling temps. Finally, at the event itself, I duct taped the door and that took care of the problem. I mean, how can you control the temps when the door is so leaky? The day was breezy, not terrible, but enough to make it tricky, and if the door wasn't taped, it would have been a nightmare.

I have never taped the door. The WSM was not designed to be airtight and it needn't be to cook well. Bending the door to minimize (not eliminate the spaces). A simple windblock, if the occasion calls for it, is all I ever do, and, imo, is all that is needed.

You should be able to find a felt high heat gasket material at fireplace/grill shops. Just peel off the double-backed tape and apply to the edges of the door and trim to fit. Works PERFECTLY and no more leaks.

When I first got mine one side of the door had a 1/2 inch gap ! But as easy as the material is to bend reforming it to fit was simple took less than a min and NO its not air tight but works fine and temps even in a 25 mph winds have held dead steady . YMMV but there is no way the WSM was meant to be air tight .

And a simple adjustment should take care of it in short order atleast it did for me .

when i got my used wsm the door was bent everywhichway. had bends on bends. i slowly unbent it a bit at a time. no its not pefect but if things are going well on the burn there is very little smoke coming out. temp control is no problem.

If you get really frustrated, and want the door, you might consider the SS replacement door from Cajun Bandit. There's a post on here somewhere about it. I got one of the first ones from Chris Perres at CB and it works great.

I agree with Pat. I am very happy with my SS replacement door.

Thanks for the suggestions. I couldn't use a wind break at the comp 'cause I didn't have one with me, though I made sure the door was leeward. I'll look into the other solutions.
