I made my own damper tabs. I drilled a small hole in the damper tab and screwed small blocks of wood on them. It always seemed, even though I usually have something in hand, that I reach down with my free hand try to move the damper.
This is probably a remnant of my days as a welder, my fingers were so calloused that I could touch hot stuff for a second or two without burning them.
