Craycorts on a WSM

I think this would be a waste. The CIGs work for grilling -- getting those nice char marks on steaks, etc. The WSM is essencially a charcoal powered oven. You won't get the char marks unless you drop the grates to a few inches above the hot coals and use it as a grill. Keep the CIGs for your kettle.

I agree it will do nothing for you when smoking but if you ever want to remove the center section and grill with the WSM, or just remove the water pan and build a hot fire, you would then receive the benefit the CIGs have to offer. That is, if you believe them to be of benefit.

I think there is a big benefit to putting a CI grate in if you already have one.I wouldn't buy one just for your WSM but if you have one for your grill stick it in your WSM. There is a bigger benefit to cast iron than grill marks that people forget and that is heat retention. Your temps won't fluctuate nearly as much and your recovery time when you lift the lid is very short. IMO the Craycort grate is the best option out there because it is so heavy
