Cookbox assessment

So I started the initial tear down and cleaning of the redhead Spirit 700, and came across the usual suspects of broken/corroded screws.
After cleaning most of the external grease off, and scrubbing much of the underside with a steel brush, I had a better idea of the condition of the little cookbox itself.
I already know that I am going to have to attempt to drill out a couple of the screws 😬, but as far as the condition of the drip pan posts as well as some of the deep pitting, on a scale of "this is fine" to "you're totally effed", where would you guys rate the condition? Is it worth even trying, or should I not even bother?

It would break my heart a little bit to do so, but I’d probably have to file this one under “the law of diminishing returns” and resign myself to escorting that cook box to the scrap heap. And yes, it’s probably easier for me to say this when I have 4 or 5 more of the same cook box out in the boneyard at any given time.

That cookbox is definitely teetering on not worth the effort. The good news is that you can probably use a box from a Silver B to replace it, and those you can pick up anywhere for cheap or free.

I knew I was right about the cookbox but I looked it up anyway. E Replacement parts .com still has new cookboxes in stock. The second photo shows all the models that use that same one. Screenshot_20230915-214942.pngScreenshot_20230915-214922.png

Just find a donor grill....thousands of those deep box grills get curbed every year. Now is the time to find someone dumping their grills before having to store them "one more winter".

That was what I suggested as well. I was just showing that a cookbox from a Silver B was the same as one from a Spirit 700.
