Convert kettle to gas grill?

I am thinking of converting my old 18,5 kettle to use gas as heatsource. I have found a burner capable of delivering 23 000 BTU.

Would be mounting it in the bottom of the kettle, where the One-Touch cleaning "wings" is normaly mounted. To help spread the heat more evenly, I would use a plate made to do just that (sit on top of a gas burner and help spread the heat).

Would this have any chance of working?

If you're talking about something to keep you warm I would think by the design of the kettle your heat would go straight up and not radiate much to the sides.
If you're trying to make a gas grill if I remember right Weber years ago made a gas kettle and it was an epic failure.

Would it work? Probably. Would it work well, I doubt it. It seems like a lot of work and effort to make a marginal at best gas grill.

Charcoal is superior to propane in every way except for cost for the fuel per cook, and for the convenience of not waiting for a chimney to heat up.

Get a Q 2000 or 2200 if you want a gasser that's about the same size as an 18.5 kettle. I have a 200, it's great for those small quick cooks.

Make sure you use rigid gas pipe for any portion within the kettle. Also any type of insurance you have will be null and void if you accidentally burn down your house with it or torch your vehicle.

Where is the dripping grease going to go? That's really the crux of designing a gas grill. If you don't get it funnelled away from the burner and into a drip pan, you will eventually end up with a big roaring grease fire.

I agree with finding a Q and not putting anybody or anything in harms way. My dad had a GAS weber..... and odly enough I think we turned it into a charcoal unit!
Watch Craigslist Q's go cheap. Espically if they do not know how to use the new style regulators...... just sayin....:p

If you are bored and looking for something to do with your 18.5" kettle, turn it into a WSM or a little pizza oven.
Either would be much safer than blowing yourself or your family up with a home brewed half baked propane contraption.
