Coffee Beans, Rubs, Smoking Packet

Has anyone used coffee beans in a foil-wrapped smoking packet? I've used rice and tea leaves for Chinese tea-smoked duck with success...

Also, when using ground coffee in a rub, does it taste a bit gritty?

Not if it is ground to a powder, no. It reconstitutes like other powdered spices. I use it in many rubs.

I have not used beans in packets.

Gary, I have used ground coffee for years in my brisket rub. Can't taste any grit to my knowledge. Adds a great flavor. Use a real strong brand like Starbucks but I've heard of guys using instant also

Here's a recipe that I like and have used many times:

ancho coffee rub

try it on grilled strip steaks.

I burned lots of stuff in foil packets but never coffee. Before trying anything new, I'll burn some on the stove top to see if it smells good and may stick something neutrally flavored (cooked rice, white bread, etc) in the smoke to catch the flavor. It works really well.

See how it burns, because often I find that spices impart the same flavor whether directly applied or turned to smoke first, so other than perfuming the neighborhood it doesn't really make sense to burn them instead of rubbing them on.

on a side note, I'm on the hunt for cocoa shells. my MIL used to buy big bags that she used for garden mulch. Her entire yard would smell like nestle's quick for about an hour. I haven't been able to find them since I started looking, but I'd love to know how they'd burn.

Thanks gents; much appreciated. I'm working on concocting a recipe for smoked "Aztec" ribs. Will let you know...
