I'm finally going to get around to cleaning this guy

.

I purchased 00 steel wool. Is this too harsh/scratch it up? Do I need to go with 0000? Mainly getting gunk off inside and some of the rust on dings on the outside.

I already burned off most of crap inside, just getting it to super clean.

Thanks for any answers.

I have never used steel wool on a Weber, but from what I have heard & read here, 00 may be too harsh. 0000 and elbow grease (well, with some sort of degreaser) may be what you need. It looks pretty good already!

oo is fine as long as you don't use a lot of pressure. i use 000 with no problems. i also use a lot of oven cleaner. a note on this. if its heavy then use easy off. if its lighter then any other brand can be used. a lot of scrubbing brought me to this conclusion.for hevy stuff it helps to get a very stiff plastic scraper. i do use a metal scraper or razor blade but i'm very carefull of how i use them.

Totally agreed George. I use a plastic scraper, easy off and I have a very small x-acto chisel blade that I am very very cautious with for the really stuck on crud. I would highly recommend a good thick pair of rubber gloves. That oven cleaner will eat up your hands. I have used Scotch Brite pads as well with some success. I also got a spray degreaser that helps cuts through some of the muck. It will take an afternoon, but you will get through it. I got a Blue kettle last week and I spent three hrs on Saturday but it's pretty clean now.

IMO I always SOAK with Oven Cleaner for at least and hour and then with lots of water and brillo, it will come out like new
