Cleaning caked on goop

bought an '88 smokey Joe the other day, it is in amazing condition but the inside of the kettle has thick caked on goop. Is the preferred method to clean it ez off oven cleaner? I used a putty knife but it is on their good and I don't want to scratch the porcelin coating.

Scrape of the loose stuff with a plastic scraper.. Heat up s few briquettes and place them on the charcoal grate and let the grill heat up..
Dump out he coals and spray the insides with some Easy off. (Yellow Can) Close it up and let it sit for a while.. Rinse it out and repeat if necessary.. When it gets close.. use a 0000 pc of steel wool and some Dawn dish soap.
If tis really bad, it could take some time.
Some say to stick it inside a plastic trash bag and let the Easy Off soak for a while. I don't think that does much. The easy off will dry out if left on too long. Use hand and eye protection and avoid breathing it.

When I have to clean the grates on my gas range I put the in a plastic bag and spray them down with ammonia. I put the bag in the sun for a few hours. All the burnt on gunk comes right off.
