Cleaning ash and plastic putty knife

So as far as cleaning ash and stuff from the bottom of the WSM, has anyone tried a plastic putty knife. Seems like it would scrape away the ash, grease, and stuff, yet not scratch the porcelain.

Just curious

Werner, i lay some hd foil in the bowl, when done cooking and the wsm has extinguished itself i just take the foil out with the ashes and toss it the trash.

I have no problem cleaning any bowl of my WSM with a plastic putty knife. Since I use water in the bowl, after a cook pouring the ashes into a plastic bag inside a paper bag (it keeps the plastic from collapsing in) and then following with the leftover water and any newspaper or greasy paper towels, provides a fast in and easy cleanup. (Not my idea, it was provided here on TVWBB.) Rich

I have one of those nylon tire scrub brushes and it works great for cleaning the WSM.

Tough enough to knock off build up ash, gunk, and flakes from the inside but soft enough not to scratch the outside.

I just put a kitchen sized trash bag in a plastic bucket, dump, brush and dispose of all waste, including water. The ash soaks up the water, and everything just goes in the trash.

All great ideas.... The scrub brush is a better idea than just a plastic scrubbie. Instead of the putty knife, I was gonna use that to scrape any gunk and ash in the bottom of the bowl.

for now, whatever I have to dump, I do the same as I do for my kettle. I have a plastic kitty litter tub that I dump the ash in.. Seems to work OK.

Ill have to try a few of these ideas...Thanks again.

Noe, does using the foil ever cause the vents to be blocked at all?

Werner u just work in foil not to cover the vents, just try to get the foil as big as the charcoal ring and u will catch all the ash, as for scraping the little gunk on the sides if any i just leave it there great protection for ur bowl.

I think that Noe is right about being careful of the vents. I just spray out the bowl with a hose when it gets nasty. The only time that I even do that is when I forget to cover the WSM up before a rainstrom and the bottom fills with water. Same with the middle section - whatever doesn't spray out with a hose gets to stay.
