I'm heavily vested in Porter Cable. Then a couple years ago I saw a Craftsman 20V tire inflator that I wanted. I was able to buy an inexpensive adapter from ebay--I think--to use my Porter batteries on it.

So if worse came to worse, you could consider that approach if you don't like the price you see from the brands you own.

I thought of that, but in every case of these little vacs the design would limit if not fully prohibit fitting an adapter

True, it would not work with all designs. All of my batteries are mounted on the body surface.

Are those cloth (or perhaps paper bags) fairly "universal"? Asking because since I am heavily "vetted" in Bosch and DeWalt power tools I am considering (IF) I go to this cordless vac that I go with one of those 2 brands if I can find one cheaply enough. Just so I don't have to stock yet another type/brand of battery

I found a dacron cloth filter bag that is a close fit for a Dewalt vacuum I bought a couple of weeks ago. I could not find a bag from Dewalt?
