Clay Pan

Could somebody post a shot of the clay pan they use in an 18.5" WSM? I've been trying to figure out what it is that one would use and just can't picture it.

Its a clay flower pot saucer that goes under the flower pot. Just go to the garden dept at the local Home Depot or Lowes.

These are some old pics with a 12" saucer in my 08 water pan.

Try to find one made in the USA. There was some threads years ago where the ones made in China could contain some nasty add-ins.

Matt I went without the saucer and just foiled the pan without water and did fine this weekend. It hung around 300* with ease for as long as I needed to do a whole chicken.

Thanks, timothy. I don't know why, but I would always get this mental picture of this old clay cooking pan/bowl thing my parents had when I was little. Not really a pizza stone, per se, but not really a bowl either.

My WSM has one of the new deep water bowls, am I correct in assuming that one could still just load a clay pan into it like you did in your pics?

Yes it should work. It will just sit deeper, which might make covering with a single layer of 18" HD foil a little difficult.
Some use a 14" saucer ( I think? ) which sits up on the lip. That might be a better option.
