Charcoal grate ?

Would it behoove me to add another charcoal grate at a 90' orientation on my 18.5 to keep the small pieces of charcoal from falling through to the bottom on the smoker? Or am I just going to clog up the ash and shut down air flow?

clogs up with ash if you use briquettes....not so bad with lump.

I do it with both, you just have to give the legs a few taps or slight kicks with briqs to knockdown the ashes.

I've done that on my Performer grill, but haven't felt it necessary on the WSM. Only use K-Comp on the WSM, fuel varies on the Performer-- sometimes lump, sometimes briquette. Don't think I would have done this on the Performer if I wasn't using lump.

I do with briquettes, on my 22, never experience an ash problem with up to 12 hour cooks.......................d

I do it all the time but I don't use KB. Other briquettes I've tried work fine but I mostly use lump and made a charcoal basket using a charcoal grate for the bottom. I turn it 90 degrees.

Check this out, you cat take two grates and a couple S/S hose clamps and connect them all together, now you have a shaker to shake the ash if neeed be, Ive never had a problem. Only time I need to shake is to save any unused lump or briquettes.

I did the same Ron for my 22. Got a replacement grate from Home Depot and attached them to the ring with metal zip ties from Harbor Freight. Works great. Never had an ash problem even if I smoked twice in a weekend and did not clean it out from the first cook.

Add me to the list who added an 18" replacement charcoal grate inside the ring of my 22" and wired it all together.
