Charcoal grate

Friends,

My 18.5 wsm charcoal grate has reached the point that I can sense a limited life left in it. I don't know when the rust will finally claim it's victim, but it will be sooner rather than later. I'd like to buy a replacement locally at a HD or Lowes, but I don't know which model grate fits my wsm. I suppose I could measure it and take the measurement to the store, but my question is: will the charcoal grate made for any more common model work well and for a while on the wsm? Thanks for any thoughts.

The coal grate for the 18.5" WSM is 15-1/4" The replacement grates you get @ HD or wherever are for a 18.5" kettle and those come in @ 13-1/2"
You could buy one of those and lay it ontop of the old one, or call Weber or search the net for a proper replacement.

Edit. I never tried, but they (or ACE) might order one for you that you could pick up at the store

Yup, the charcoal grate is the only thing I can't find locally. The top grate is easy to find of course since it's the same as the 18.5" grills. The middle grate is actually the same size as the 22.5" charcoal grill grates (the OTS, OTG, Performer, etc). I've looked and looked for a local charcoal grate only to give up and order one from Weber directly.

Thanks friends. I'll call Weber one pay day soon and order and replacement. I've set up a tent on my patio to protect my stainless performer and wsm. I figure it's easier to replace a tent for $100 than those two beauties. And hopefully that will keep the rain out of my wsm and preserve the next grate.

Is the 18" WSM charcoal grate a smokey joe grate? I believe the old water bowel was a smokey joe lid.

The grate on my SJP is the same (13-1/2") as the 18.5" kettles.
The grate on my smaller SJ was only like 10".
So nope its not a SJ grate.

yea, its not in demand enough for stores to carry. even my weber dealer doesn't stock it. best is to get it from weber. course the best is to wait for a free shipping period.

I had the same problem in my wsm 18 incher. The charcoal grate was warped and was letting full size charcoal fall thru it. Weber wanted 18 dollars PLUS shipping for the correct replacement. No thanks. I went to Lowes, bought the charcoal grate for the 18 inch KETTLE. It is smaller but just turn it slightly and lay it on top of the old one. Bolt it together and there you go, instant mod! No more coal falling thru either. The new one just fits inside of the charcoal ring...
