Charcoal grate mod

Ever since the first time I used my WSM , I have thought it'd be a good idea to be able to lift the charcoal grate out ring and all. I had thought about adding the eye bolts as they show in the mod section of the VWB , but then someone mentioned wiring the charcoal ring to the grate.....duh! That's perfect! I took a few scraps of electrical wire bent and twisted around the grate , and there you go....now I can just grab the ring and lift the whole shootin match out after a cook.

I agree. One of the most useful first mods on the WSM. If the copper doesn't hold up after awhile, go to HD and pick up some re-bar tie wire.
That's what I used, and still holdin up after a few yrs.

Yeah , as I was doing it I started to wonder how this wire would hold up....I bet I can scrounge a piece of rebar tie wire at work , that's a good thought , thanks.

I bought some stainless wire and used that for mine. A also added the smaller grate at 90* mod at the same time and also tied it with stainless wire. Been holding since 2005, so I guess it works OK.

I'm going to remove my Weber ring, and make a taller one of expanded metal, perhaps weld it on. On my 18.5, using the Weber ring, for extended pork butt cooks, I've had to add chunk at around the 10 hour mark. My neighbor, with his homebrew 55-gal UDS, can get over 16 hrs with coals left; and I had built the ring on his of expanded metal to his specs. Also, last night I welded extensions onto the bottom my grill holder bars, after straightening out the lower bends so that the bottom grille is about 1.5 inches lowers, and sits on the clay disc I use instead of the water dish. I also added a brass port for thermocouple probes at the same time. I'm gearing up for a cooler, smokier, season.

Went to Home Depot and bought the re-bar wire tie package for $2.20
I didn't even use 1/4th of the ties, but yet wired the crap out of the ring.
