Char-Griller Acorn Hinge

Hey everyone just got a 18.5 wsm the other day and I want to put a hinge on it. Has anyone put on a Akron Hinge 14$ compared to unknown’s price of $50. Just looking for some advice for a new WSM owner. Thanks Dave.

Side note I found a few YouTube videos of people who had to notch either the WSM or hinge to get it to fit. I ordered it anyway but I’m gonna see if I can think of anyway that doesn’t involve doing either

If you look at the OP's second pic, he used washers as shims to bump out the hinge for clearance.(y)

I’m not using it on my WSM but on a kettle, and when I need to give it a good cleaning the “Unknown” is a breeze to remove and replace when cleaning and it allows the ability to use a rotisserie very handily! It might cost a little more but, it’s a clever design. Put me in the “Unknown” camp for certain!

I acquired an Acorn Char Griller in the purchase of a Red Weber Gas grill that I am restoring. The hinge was all askew and mangled on the Akorn. I disassembled the Akorn, purchased a new hinge, and made the repairs to it. While I had the hinge in my hand, I looked at using one on my WSM 22.5. The Akorn hinge seemed to me to be very flimsy, and not designed for the radius of the WSM. I decided that I didn't want to risk the lid to my WSM on that piece. Could it work? Probably. Would it hold up? Possibly. I wasn't willing to risk it. BTW, I sold the Akorn for more than I paid for the 2 units, so I am restoring a Red Weber gasser that I now own with zero out of pocket........LOL. Just my 2 cents on that hinge.

I am thinking of buying 2 of these. One for my WSM18 and the other for my Performer as I do hate the lid bale. I do need to be able to remove the lid easily to use the rotisserie ring. Has anyone tried replacing the 2 bolts with a pin of some sort?

Good question, that’s the thing holding me back from putting one on the ”Overperformer“ 22” kettle. I’m very happy with the “Unknown” on the 18, I think the simple pin release on that is maybe the right way for me to go, I want ease for removal when I need to rotisserie something!

I just found this posted by @Jake from Iowa https://tvwbb.com/threads/wsm-lid-hinge-options.82390/page-2

I figure if he could find this long treaded bolt I can find the same or some kind of rod and drill a hole at each end for a pin or even something like this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RJBGHNP/?tag=tvwb-20

I just ordered 2 hinges. I will try and update this thread when I get them, try to make a quick release, and then the installs on the WSM 18 and Performer.

I mounted the 1st hinge on my WSM18. Just for the record, I hate doing this. I fix things, I don't mod or improve them, as I find my measurements or something are usually off, like this. I think I put the hinge too low on the center piece and then had to get out the angle grinder to notch the hinge so it would work. I also used 2 washers on the 2 top bolts on bottom part of the hinge. I did find a pin that seems to work great making it easy to take the lid off. I will do my performer some time I am feeling brave now that I have a working way to take the lid off to use the rotisserie. Do make sure you align your hinge with a wheel for stability when putting the center on the base.
2 hinges with pins for less than $50 seems a lot more reasonable than some other options. This hinge is also a lower profile if you want to use a WSM cover.

Thanks for posting this and for the link to the pin. Do you know if this hinge would work on a 22?
